Urban Leaders in Training
"Urban Leaders in Training provides intensive year-long service and leadership development experiences. Through Urban Leaders in Training, NLF seeks to transform program participants from individuals with good intentions into a community of Leaders who are equipped to effectively serve urban communities and those living on the margins."
The Program: Each Urban Leaders experience is composed of three elements
Service - Urban Leaders are placed in service positions with local faith-based/community-based organizations, churches and NLF programs where they will have the opportunity to work directly alongside vulnerable populations and those who have been marginalized throughout the City.
Training - Program participants receive weekly training opportunities as well as retreats and extended learning opportunities to be equipped with the perspectives and skills to effectively serve vulnerable people in the city.
Mentorship - Each program participant is matched with a seasoned community leader as a mentor. Mentors walk alongside Urban Leaders in Training throughout their term of service to provide individualized support and coaching as well as an opportunity to explore longer-term vocational direction and goals.
The Opportunities: Urban Leaders in Training consists of two service opportunities. Both opportunities are full-time.
AmeriCorps - AmeriCorps members through Urban Leaders in Training are placed in partnering organizations to address the critical issues in our community, including:
- The academic success of high needs urban students through in-school advocacy and afterschool mentoring and tutoring
- Providing college access to multicultural and first-generation students
- Addressing the needs of expelled, long-term suspended and truant youth
City as Parish Internship - City as Parish interns are placed in churches throughout Tacoma's urban core. Interns work toward the spiritual and social renewal of the City by:
- Promoting Unity of the body of Christ by connecting congregations to the neighborhoods in which they are located
- Providing Essential Services to low-income people and those who live on the margins in our City
- Advocating for the common good and assisting churches to to speak on behalf of the vulnerable.
- Opportunities to earn graduate credit are available.
